Short version: it strengthened my resume. It has not, on its own, gotten me a single interview. Here’s exactly what the certificate does, what it doesn’t, and what I’m doing instead.

I finished the Google Cybersecurity Professional Certificate. It sits on my resume next to my BBA in Management Information Systems, and I’ll be straight with you before the SEO-friendly listicle version of this post would: it looks good on paper, my LinkedIn profile got a little more attention after I posted it, and I don’t regret the time I put in. But if you’re asking whether it opens doors on its own — whether a recruiter sees “Google Cybersecurity Certificate” and picks up the phone — my own experience says no. Not yet, anyway. So let’s actually break down what this thing is good for, because “worth it” depends entirely on what you think you’re buying.

What the certificate actually teaches you

The program is eight courses run through Coursera, roughly 180 hours total, designed to take someone with zero background to “entry-level ready.” You work through:

  • Foundations of security, risk, and compliance frameworks
  • Networks and network security
  • Linux and SQL basics
  • Python for automating repetitive security tasks
  • SIEM tools, including hands-on time in Splunk and Chronicle
  • Incident detection and response
  • A final portfolio project you can point to in interviews

It’s genuinely well built as an on-ramp. If you’re coming from outside IT entirely, it’s a legitimate way to learn the vocabulary and get your hands on the tools without paying for a bootcamp. That part isn’t hype.

What it actually did for me

Concretely:

  • It’s a keyword that Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) recognize, so resumes that would otherwise get filtered for having “no cybersecurity experience” have one more reason to survive the first pass.
  • It gave me a structured vocabulary for talking about SOC concepts in a way that lines up with how my actual command-center work already touches security operations.
  • It was free-ish and self-paced, which mattered more to me than any prestige factor — I did it around a full course load and a job, not instead of them.

What it didn’t do

It hasn’t, by itself, gotten me into an interview room. I want to be specific about that instead of hiding it under vague “your results may vary” language, because that’s the part most reviews of this certificate skip. Having the credential on a resume next to a business degree, an active homelab, and a public GitHub didn’t change the response rate in any way I could measure. The applications that got a reply were the ones where I could point to something built, not something completed.

The uncomfortable stat: The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects double-digit growth for information security analyst roles this decade — but nearly every entry-level opening in that data still asks for “entry-level” experience most beginners don’t have yet. That contradiction is the whole story of breaking into this field, and no certificate resolves it by itself.

Why a certificate can’t do the job a portfolio does

Here’s the mechanism, as best I can tell from the inside of my own job search. A certificate answers one question for an employer: did this person commit to structured learning? That’s it. It doesn’t answer the two questions that actually get you into a room:

  1. Can you do the work? A cert says you finished labs someone else designed. A homelab, a honeypot you stood up yourself, or a write-up of a real vulnerability you found says you can operate without a syllabus.
  2. Are you actually into this, or checking a box? Anyone can pay $49 a month and finish a Coursera track. Far fewer people run Suricata and a Cowrie honeypot on their own network for fun, or blog about what hit it. That’s the differentiator hiring managers actually remember.

Put bluntly: the certificate gets your resume past a filter built by software. A portfolio gets you past the filter built by a human being who’s read two hundred resumes that all say the same thing.

What I’m doing instead (and alongside it)

I’m not throwing the certificate away — it’s still going on the resume, and it’s still a fine answer to “do you know the basics.” But the actual leverage I’m building is:

  • A homelab that generates real content — Pi-hole, Proxmox, and Suricata monitoring my own traffic, which turns into blog posts instead of just private tinkering
  • A public GitHub that shows finished, working projects instead of tutorial follow-alongs
  • This blog — writing about real incidents and my own troubleshooting in plain language does more to demonstrate “can explain a security concept to a non-technical stakeholder” than any exam ever could, and that’s a skill SOC teams explicitly screen for
  • TryHackMe rooms, worked through and written up, not just completed silently

So — should you get it?

Yes, if: you’re starting from zero, you want a structured, cheap way to learn the vocabulary and tools, and you’re prepared to treat the certificate as step one of five, not the finish line.

Skip it (or deprioritize it), if: you already have IT fundamentals and are choosing between this and something employers ask for by name, like Security+ — in that case, the named credential usually earns more attention from recruiters scanning for specific keywords.

Either way: budget the same number of hours toward building something nobody assigned you. That’s the part of my own path I’d tell past-me to start on day one instead of month three.
